DIY VALENTINES DECOR CUSHION

Here’s an easy way to dress up an existing decor cushion for Valentine’s Day! This DIY was inspired by a Christmas cushion I saw online from Target. (See image below). I thought is was so cute and totally my style with the girly velvet pink material, pearls, and tassels. Sadly in Canada, we don’t have Target 😭 and they don’t ship to Canada either. What’s up with that? They need to change that! Also, the boarders are closed with the pandemic and travelling is a nuisance these days. A lightbulb went off in my head…Time to DIY!!! I decided to make pearl hearts instead of the trees for Valentine’s Day, but really this pillow can be used all year round. It was very easy to make and I must say I love how it turned out. It saved me some $ as well and I’m all about saving! 😃

SUPPLIES

  • Fabric (Use velvet if you want to achieve a similar look)
  • Faux Pearls (I found cheap pearl necklaces at the dollar store)
  • Yarn (ivory or white)
  • Sewing Machine OR Hot Glue Gun (Hand stitching is fine too)
  • Scissors
  • Ruler
  • Pen/Maker
  • Small piece of cardboard (Assists with making the tassels)

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Place 2 pieces of your fabric right-side-in. Measure out how big you want your cushion to be. I took the exact measurements of an existing cushion cover and marked it onto my fabric. This will be the line you’ll be stitching or hot gluing on.

2) Leave about two inches from your marking when you cut your fabric out. This will give you some room to work with while stitching.

3) Use a sewing machine, hot glue gun, OR hand stitch around the pillow on the line you marked. Leave one side open to insert your cushion later on.

4) Turn it inside out.

5) I used a hot glue gun for the pearl hearts. I just eyeballed the placing for it, but for a more precise placement, you can measure it out before hand.

6) Now moving onto the tassels. You need a piece of sturdy cardboard. Cut it to the length you want your tassels to be. Start wrapping the yarn around the cardboard many times until you get the thickness you want.

7) Tightly tie a knot with a small piece yarn around the top.

8) Remove the cardboard

9) Tie another piece of small yarn about an inch down from the top to form the head of the tassel. I used the hot glue gun to glue down the ends so it looks neat.

10) Cut the loop at the end.

11) Trim the ends so that they’re even.

12) Insert your pillow into the cushion cover.

13) Close the last end of the cushion by tucking the ends in and either sewing it or using a hot glue gun to keep it shut.

14) Now time to add the tassels to each corner of the cushion. I used the glue gun again, but I do recommend hand sewing them on if you know how to sew.

15) Admire your new beautiful Valentine’s Day cushion! 😆
